The Meaning of Death

Today, I am going to discuss a very morbid subject, it is about the meaning of death. If you are not prepared to know what is the meaning of death. I suggest you not to read this article.

I believe life is a journey. As soon as we are born, we started to learn. As a baby or toddler, we learned how to walk and talk. As we grow older, we go to school and we learn a lot of things. Throughout our life, we keep learning until the day we die.

We become an adult, we find a partner for ourselves and we will have children of our own. We learn how to be parents through practice and we made some mistake. I don’t know why our school never teach us anything about parenting. The worse of all, our school never teach us “the meaning of life”. It is the most important knowledge of all, but they don’t teach.  (Note: I will not discuss the meaning of life in this article. I have written about this in other articles already.)

Now, back to our main topic. I want to ask you a couple of questions before we continue.

Do you know why we have to die? What does death means to you?

eden

Someone told me, he doesn’t know what death means. It is a mystery to him.

I know many people are afraid of death, they find it uncomfortable even talking about death.

I tell you, death is just a natural progression. Like I said at the beginning, life is a journey.  You should know that all journeys have a start and an ending. Like eating dinner, you start eating and no matter how long it takes and you will have to finish – you simply could not keep eating forever. So life is exactly the same, you cannot keep living forever. This is what we called “the circle of life”.

Let me tell you this, actually, death is good in some way. Let me give you a few examples.

The first example I give you is from my own personal experience. My mother in law, she has been sick for quite some time. In the last few years of her life. She cannot see, cannot eat solid food (she was fed milk three times a day).  She cannot walk, one of her legs was amputated because of serious infection. As far as quality of life was concerned, she had none. She was kept in this condition for few years. In the bottom of my heart, I wish she could die early and it would end her suffering.

Once I have seen an article. There was a man paralyzed from the neck down, he said, “I feel like I am living in a prison. I am trapped inside my own body and it is worse than a prisoner. I wish they could let me die and release me from my suffering.” I almost cried. That is why in some countries, euthanasia is legal (good for them) – how cruel we are treating someone like that. If you are in the same situation, what would you choose?

Have you seen the movie “The Green Miles”, by Tom Hanks? He got the gift of longevity, but later he found that it was not a gift, but a curse. He witnesses his wife, his children, his friends all died before him. Could you imagine if you saw everyone you loved passed away before you? He felt so miserable and lonely. He has a friend which was a little mouse, it also received the gift of longevity. So you see, living forever is not a gift. Once we realized this, we will no longer be afraid of dying.

As for myself, I do not afraid of dying. All things come to an end and it is not anything mysterious. I know the reason you are afraid of dying is because you cannot let go of something or someone.

If you cannot let go of families or friends around you,  I could understand. If you cannot let go of your wealthy, I pity you -you don’t understand the meaning of life. I would suggest you go and find out. I have told my eighteen-year-old son, “When I die, just carry on if nothing had happened. Keep on living your life happily and that is all I wanted.”

When you really understand life’s meaning you will not be afraid of dying.  Make use of the time you have to enrich yourself, enjoy life and be happy.  Do whatever you wanted to do and when death comes and you won’t have any regrets.  You are prepared.

If this is still not good enough for you, I now give you something, a choice that you can take with you:

  1. Join a church, after you died you will go to heaven.
  2. Be a Buddhist, after you died you will reborn again.
  3. Be a naturalist, after you died you will become a tree, a flower, a butterfly or anything you choose.

Remember, after you die, I will come and join you someday – don’t  be scared, you are not alone.

Signing off

Totally agree with you.
My place in heaven is already reserved – and while I do enjoy life (or heaven) on earth – I can hardly wait to rejoice in the real heaven.

Very blessed.
John.

    Hi John,

I am happy for you that you have already got a reservation in heaven.
I am not sure if I can follow you or not.

    God bless you.

I’ve very much enjoyed your post about Death… my father in law died of cancer last year and the ‘Tibetan Book Of The Dead’ helped us immensely… both mentally and spiritually to deal with things… the basic notion of your post is very similar 🙂

    Hi Steve,

Thank you for leaving me a comment. I have never read this book “Tibetan Book of The Dead”.
I just write it as ideas come into my mind. I am sorry to hear about your father in law; he will rest in peace in heaven.

    Best regards,
    MisterWailor
