Knowledge and Wisdom

data

Do you know how to obtain wisdom?

You can do what King Solomon did; he asked God to give him wisdom.  He was already quite wise for he didn’t ask for longevity or wealth. (Kings  I 3:9)  God gave him wisdom and wealth.

Why didn’t he asked for knowledge?

In our world today, we crave for knowledge.  There are millions of websites, which provided us with truckloads of information.  It is becoming too much, that is why someone called it “information overload”.

Do you know what is the difference between knowledge and wisdom?  I asked my son the same question some time ago.

Here was the answer he gave me, “knowledge is data.  Wisdom is you know how to make use of the data.”  Interesting answer, isn’t it?  My son was correct, knowledge is only data.  If we haven’t learned how to use the knowledge, then there is no benefit having that knowledge.

I give you an example:

One night I was having dinner with my friend Samuel.  He asked me, “how do you put those hooks on the wall? It is very difficult using my hand.”  And I told him, “easy, you just put a screwdriver on the hook and turn.”  I showed him with my hands how to do that.

“I know that you don’t have to tell me, that is a lever system,” he replied.  He is a physics teacher and he teaches physics and maths in a local high school.

I smiled and didn’t say anything.  I was thinking, “Yes, you know lever system, but how come you don’t know how to use it.”

So you see, having the knowledge doesn’t mean you know how to use it.  That is why I do not like the current education curriculum, they teach our children too much information without teaching them how to use it.  I have another article “What should we teach our children” if you would like to read it.

I think it is important to teach something that they can use, they don’t really have to teach so much knowledge to our kids.

Tell you how I look at it:

If you have learned 100 subjects, and you only know how to use 5 of them.

I only need to learn 10 subjects, but I will learn how to use all of them.  Then I would be much better off than you.  I have 10 usable knowledge of subjects and you have only 5.

It is where wisdom comes in.  Wisdom is more powerful than knowledge, but the definition of wisdom only applies to the certain area in our life.  It doesn’t teach you how to make money, but it will show you how to use the money wisely.

Wisdom can be used and applied in our daily life.  For example, should you go for a lower pay job which has a good long term prospect or should you go for a high pay job which has no long term benefits?  I am sure someone will choose that high paying job.

So how could we be wiser if we cannot get wisdom from God like King Solomon?

Actually, it is not that difficult, but you have to work for it.  You have to use your brain more often and often think of things logically.  When a supermarket advertised on TV and tell you that they have the biggest discount, should you trust them?  Also, when someone tell you, “I will teach you the secret of winning the lotto, but you have to give me $5000.”  Is it a genuine offer?

So when you are using your brain, you should ask yourself, “If this guy has the secret to winning lotto, why does he need $5000 from me?  Shouldn’t he be a millionaire already?”

When you exercise your brain more and it will become more powerful.  Your will unleash it’s full potential and you will become smarter and wiser.

Conclusion: Wisdom does not come from education and learning.  (Have you ever seen someone who are highly educated and extremely stupid.  If you have watched Big Bang Theory, you will know what I mean.  There are people who are like this in real life, believe me.) Wisdom comes from within oneself.  Dig deep and you will find it.

Dear Mister Wailor,

I recently took about 6 weeks to go through a academic training program, and in the process I earned 5 certificates. When it was all finished I was proud, but I didn’t have a clue what to do with it. Now I am enrolled in a practical, hands on training program that has me implementing new knowledge every day, every step of the way toward an end result that will serve an ongoing income producing career. Knowledge vs. wisdom. Now, I am gaining wisdom. Great post!

Hey, MisterWailor

I know it sounds a little dumb but I never really knew the difference between knowledge and wisdom. But after reading your blog post it’s put everything in to perspective.

Thanks, Neil

Hi MisterWailor,
Great post, I really can relate to you about the current educational system not applying what the students are learning. I think that is what is superb about the Wealthy Affiliate educational system. They have learn a lesson, then you have to apply it to your business or whatever you are doing at the time. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

Thank you MrWailor,
for yet another insightful and useful article.

When I think of all this endless killing that goes on in all these “tribal wars,” there is plenty of knowledge to make sophisticated weapons such as what downed that airliner, plenty of knowledge how to kill and maim, but how is it helping the human race? Where is the wisdom in all that!

You indeed have wisdom in your writings!
(I must say I did not know of the screwdriver trick! Thanks:)

    Hi Shawn,

Thanks for your comment. It is sad that mankind are so educated, but all this killing and wars.
    It is senseless.
    Have a nice day.

You didn’t say how old your son is, but he is obviously a very wise person to know the difference. I couldn’t quite put it into words myself, but he did perfectly. I love the article and the message it gives.

    Hi Lynne,

I am glad you like the article.

I think with Knowledge and Wisdom you also need to have common sense. It takes all three to work efficiently at anything in life. It seem to me that Common sense is a thing of the past. I like to watch court show and I marvel at the thing people come up with. This girl got evicted because she did not pay rent for 3 months so she tried to sue the landlord for moving expenses. Her thought was he wants me to leave so he has to pay me to move. What are kids being taught in school these days.

    Hi Bill,

Thanks for your comment. I believed common sense is part of wisdom.
The girl you mentioned has some twisted idea which are very common within our younger generation.
It is because we didn’t teach them what is right or wrong.

I know what you mean. My math teacher is one of the smartest men I know when it comes to math, computer science, or physics, but in the real world he is socially awkward and sometimes says dumb things. He is getting better and I am happy for him. If he got some common sense and learned how to interact with people, he could be a very influential person and could really make a difference in this world.

    Thanks for your comment Ron,

There are lots of people who has lots of knowledge, but very little wisdom.
Nothing we can do about it.
    Cheers,

    MisterWailor
